Overview

Calcitrol Capsule contains Calcitriol, the active form of Vitamin D3, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is used in the management of hypocalcaemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic renal failure on dialysis, in hypoparathyroidism, and in osteoporosis where active Vitamin D supplementation is required.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: initial dose 0.25 mcg once daily, adjusted based on serum calcium levels and clinical response, as prescribed by the physician. Adequate calcium intake must be ensured during treatment.

Interaction

Thiazide diuretics may increase the risk of hypercalcaemia. Cholestyramine and mineral oils may reduce absorption. Avoid concurrent use with other Vitamin D preparations or calcium-containing antacids unless under medical supervision.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in hypercalcaemia, hypervitaminosis D, and known hypersensitivity to calcitriol or other Vitamin D preparations.

Side Effects

Hypercalcaemia (weakness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion), hypercalciuria, and polyuria. Early symptoms of toxicity include anorexia, headache, and metallic taste.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use only if clearly necessary during pregnancy; calcitriol may be excreted in breast milk and could cause hypercalcaemia in nursing infants — use with caution and under medical supervision.

Precautions and Warnings

Regular monitoring of serum calcium, phosphate, and renal function is essential during therapy. Patients should maintain adequate fluid intake and avoid prolonged immobilisation. Stop treatment immediately if hypercalcaemia occurs.
