Overview

Colicon 10 mg Tablet contains Dicycloverine Hydrochloride, an antispasmodic agent manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It acts by relaxing smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract and is used to relieve colicky abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), spasmodic dysmenorrhoea, and other conditions characterised by intestinal or visceral smooth muscle spasm.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 10–20 mg three or four times daily as prescribed. Start with the lower dose and titrate upward based on response and tolerability. Infants under 6 months: contraindicated.

Interaction

May enhance the anticholinergic effects of other antimuscarinic drugs. Reduces GI motility and may alter absorption of other oral medications. Alcohol may potentiate CNS effects.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in infants under 6 months of age, obstructive uropathy, obstructive GI disease, severe ulcerative colitis, reflux oesophagitis, myasthenia gravis, unstable cardiovascular disease, and known hypersensitivity to dicycloverine.

Side Effects

Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, tachycardia, dizziness, and drowsiness. Dose-related anticholinergic effects.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use with caution during pregnancy; safety has not been conclusively established. Not recommended during breastfeeding due to risk of apnoea in nursing infants.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution in elderly patients (higher risk of anticholinergic effects), patients with prostatic hypertrophy, and those with angle-closure glaucoma risk. Do not drive or operate machinery if drowsy.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is dicycloverine contraindicated in infants under 6 months?
Reports of apnoea, seizures, and death have been associated with dicycloverine in very young infants; it is absolutely contraindicated under 6 months of age.

Can Colicon be used long-term for IBS?
It may be used intermittently for symptom relief, but long-term continuous use should be under physician supervision to minimise anticholinergic side effects.
