Moxquin 400 Tab

What is Moxquin?

Moxquin is a brand of Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride, a 4th generation synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. It is active against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, anaerobic and atypical bacteria including Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Indications

Moxquin tablet is indicated for the treatment of: Acute bacterial sinusitis; Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; Community-acquired pneumonia; Uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections; Complicated intra-abdominal infections; Pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pharmacology

Moxifloxacin acts by inhibiting topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, which are necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription and repair. This dual mechanism of action produces bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of pathogens.

Dosage & Administration

All indications: 400 mg once daily. Duration varies by indication:

• Acute bacterial sinusitis: 7–10 days
• Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 5–10 days
• Community-acquired pneumonia: 7–14 days
• Uncomplicated skin/skin structure infections: 7 days
• Complicated skin/skin structure infections: 7–21 days
• Complicated intra-abdominal infections: 5–14 days
• Pelvic inflammatory disease: 14 days

No dose adjustment required in renal or hepatic impairment.

Interaction

Absorption is decreased when administered with antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, or products containing iron or zinc. May enhance risk of convulsions with NSAIDs and bleeding risk with warfarin; concomitant use should be avoided.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or any other quinolone.

Side Effects

Common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness. Serious: tendinitis and tendon rupture, QT interval prolongation, arrhythmia.

Pregnancy & Lactation

FDA Pregnancy Category C. Moxifloxacin is not recommended during pregnancy or lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture — discontinue if tendon pain or inflammation occurs. Avoid in patients with known QT prolongation, uncorrected hypokalaemia, or those receiving Class IA or III antiarrhythmics. Not established for safety and efficacy in patients under 18 years of age.

Use in Special Populations

No dose adjustment needed in renal or hepatic impairment. Safety and effectiveness in patients under 18 years not established.
