Overview
Oroclean Cool Mint Mouthwash is an antiseptic oral rinse containing a combination of four proven antimicrobial agents: Menthol, Thymol, Eucalyptol, and Methyl Salicylate. This combination — the same formulation as the globally recognised Listerine® antiseptic mouthwash — provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against the full range of oral bacteria, including pathogens responsible for gingivitis (gum inflammation) and plaque formation. The Cool Mint variant offers a refreshing mint flavour for improved palatability and compliance. Regular use as an adjunct to brushing and flossing significantly reduces dental plaque, gingivitis, and oral bacterial load. For diabetic patients — who are at significantly elevated risk of periodontitis — antiseptic mouthwash is a particularly important oral hygiene tool.
Active Ingredients and Actions
| Ingredient | Antimicrobial Action |
|---|---|
| Thymol | Phenolic antiseptic; disrupts bacterial cell membranes; strong activity against oral Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria |
| Eucalyptol (1,8-Cineole) | Terpenoid antiseptic; antibacterial and anti-inflammatory; improves breath freshness |
| Menthol | Antibacterial; provides cooling sensation; topical analgesic for minor gum soreness |
| Methyl Salicylate | Anti-inflammatory (topical aspirin-like); reduces gingival inflammation; wintergreen character |
Benefits
- Kills 99.9% of common oral bacteria causing plaque and gingivitis
- Reduces dental plaque build-up — complement to brushing
- Treats and prevents gingivitis — clinically proven in multiple trials
- Freshens breath (halitosis) — eliminates bacteria that produce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs)
- Reaches areas between teeth and under gumline that brushing misses
Critical Relevance for Diabetic Patients
- Periodontitis and diabetes — bidirectional link: Periodontitis (severe gum disease) is the 6th major complication of diabetes. Diabetic patients are 2–3 times more likely to develop severe periodontitis, and untreated periodontitis worsens glycaemic control — raising HbA1c by 0.5–1.0% in some studies. Treating gum disease has been shown to improve HbA1c.
- Higher oral bacterial load in diabetes: Elevated blood glucose promotes growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and other periodontal pathogens in the gingival crevice. Antiseptic mouthwash reduces this burden.
- Dry mouth (xerostomia) in diabetes: Diabetic patients often have reduced saliva production (autonomic neuropathy, medication effects) — saliva is the mouth's natural antibacterial defence. Antiseptic mouthwash helps compensate for this.
- Recommendation: Use Oroclean twice daily (morning and night) after brushing — swish for 30 seconds, do not rinse with water afterwards. Regular dental check-ups every 6 months are essential.
- Blood glucose monitoring tip: Avoid sugar-containing mouthwashes — Oroclean does not contain added sugar, making it suitable for diabetic oral hygiene.
How to Use
Pour 20mL (about 4 teaspoons) into a cup. Swish vigorously for 30–60 seconds, ensuring solution reaches all areas of the mouth. Spit out — do not swallow. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after use. Use twice daily after brushing. For children under 12 — use under adult supervision; not recommended for children under 6.
Precautions
Do not swallow. Alcohol-containing mouthwashes may cause temporary staining on composite restorations — if concerned, consult dentist. Contains alcohol — not recommended for patients with alcohol dependence. Temporary tooth staining with prolonged use is possible — treat with professional cleaning.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Keep tightly closed. Protect from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Medical Disclaimer: Antiseptic mouthwash is an adjunct to — not a replacement for — brushing, flossing, and professional dental care. Diabetic patients should see a dentist every 6 months and inform their dentist of their diabetes and medications. This information is for educational purposes only.
