DESCRIPTION

A-B1 (Thiamine Hydrochloride) is a water soluble vitamin. It is an organic

molecule which contains a pyrimidine and a thiazole nucleus linked by a

methylene bridge. It occurs as small white hygroscopic crystals or

crystalline powder that usually has a slight characteristic odour. It

functions in the body in the form of coenzyme Thiamine pyrophosphate.

Thiamine pyrophos-phate serves as a coenzyme in carbohydrate

metabolism by decar-boxylation of a-keto acids such as pyruvate and

a-ketoglutarate which leads to the formation of acetyl CoA. Thiamine or

Vitamin B1 also participates in the formation or degradation of a-ketols by

transketolase. Vitamin B1 is essential for metabolism of carbohydrate.

Recommended daily intake of Thiamine is 0.5mg/1000 kcal. Major
