Overview

Alenvir contains Tenofovir Alafenamide, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a prodrug of tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), indicated for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults with compensated liver disease.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dose is one tablet (25 mg) once daily, taken orally with food.

Interaction

Co-administration with drugs that affect P-glycoprotein activity, such as rifampin, rifabutin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and St. John's Wort, may significantly decrease tenofovir alafenamide concentrations and is not recommended.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to tenofovir alafenamide or any component of the formulation.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Long-term use may be associated with changes in renal function and bone mineral density.

Pregnancy and Lactation

May be used during pregnancy if clinically indicated; consult a physician. Caution advised during breastfeeding as tenofovir is excreted in human milk.

Precautions and Warnings

Discontinuation of therapy may lead to severe acute exacerbation of hepatitis B; patients should be monitored closely for several months after stopping treatment. Renal function should be assessed before and during therapy.
