Antazol 0.05% Nasal Drop

Overview

Antazol Nasal Drop is a sympathomimetic decongestant containing Xylometazoline Hydrochloride, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. With marked alpha-adrenergic activity, it constricts nasal blood vessels, relieving nasal congestion and allowing easier breathing within minutes, with effects lasting several hours.

Indications

Antazol is indicated for:

• Nasal congestion associated with colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, and headache
• Tubal block and serous otitis media associated with nasal congestion

Pharmacology

Nasal congestion arises from conditions such as rhinosinusitis and allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, leading to congestion of venous sinusoids lining the nasal mucosa. Xylometazoline activates alpha-adrenergic receptors, predominantly alpha-1A and alpha-2B, causing vasoconstriction of nasal mucosal blood vessels and restoring nasal airflow. It decreases nasal resistance during both inspiration and expiration and increases nasal airflow volume, with a relatively fast onset of action.

Dosage and Administration

Nasal Drop (0.05%):

• Children 6 to 12 years: 2-3 drops in each nostril, 2-3 times daily
• Children less than 6 years: 1 drop in each nostril, 2-3 times daily
• Infants less than 3 months: Not to be used

The 0.1% strength is intended for adults and should not be used in children under 12 years.

Interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery exposing the dura mater, and in those hypersensitive to Xylometazoline. Each bottle should be used by one person only to prevent cross-infection. Decongestants should not be used for more than seven consecutive days.

Side Effects

Occasionally reported side effects include a burning sensation in the nose and throat, local irritation, and nausea or dryness of the nasal mucosa.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnancy Category C. Should not be used during pregnancy. Use while breastfeeding should only occur on a doctor's advice.

Precautions and Warnings

The 0.1% strength should not be used in children below 12 years. Should not be used for prolonged periods in chronic rhinitis, as extended use may cause rebound congestion and drug-induced rhinitis.

Storage Conditions

Protect from light. For hygiene reasons, do not use the bottle more than 28 days after opening.
