Overview

Antazol Plus Nasal Spray is a combination of Sodium Cromoglicate and Xylometazoline Hydrochloride manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, formulated for the prophylaxis and treatment of allergic rhinitis accompanied by nasal congestion.

Indications

Indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of allergic rhinitis ( such as hay fever and perennial rhinitis) where this is accompanied by nasal congestion.

Pharmacology

Xylometazoline Hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic agent with alpha-adrenergic activity that produces vasoconstriction, reducing nasal congestion and allowing easier breathing. Sodium Cromoglicate acts locally on the nasal mucosa, preventing the release of mediators of type-I allergic reactions, including histamine and slow reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A), from sensitized mast cells, and also inhibits Type-III reactions to a lesser extent.

Dosage and Administration

Adults (including the elderly) and children: One spray in each nostril, four times daily. Shake the bottle gently before use; if using for the first time or after a week or more without use, prime the applicator with several presses until a fine mist appears.

Interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the preparation.

Side Effects

No serious side effects have been reported. Occasional irritation of the nasal mucosa may occur during the first day of use. Mild side effects such as nasal irritation, dryness, sneezing, headache, insomnia, drowsiness, and palpitations may occur due to the Xylometazoline component. Rarely, wheezing and chest tightness have been reported with Sodium Cromoglicate alone.

Pregnancy and Lactation

As with all medicines, caution should be exercised during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.

Precautions and Warnings

Prolonged use or abuse of decongestants in general may lead to rebound congestion or drug-induced rhinitis.

Storage Conditions

Keep below 30 degrees C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is Antazol Plus different from plain Antazol?
A: Antazol Plus combines Sodium Cromoglicate, a mast cell stabiliser for allergy prevention, with a lower dose of Xylometazoline for congestion relief, making it suitable for allergic rhinitis rather than simple cold-related congestion.

Q: How often should the nasal spray applicator be cleaned?
A: The applicator and dust cover should be washed in warm water at least once a week to maintain hygiene.
