DESCRIPTION
Azepam is Diazepam which is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer with anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties. It is used in the treatment of anxiety and tension states and also as premedication in the control of muscle spasm. lt has Iong duration of action.
COMPOSITION
Each tablet contains Diazepam BP 5 mg.
INDICATIONS
In the treatment of severe anxiety disorders
In the short term management of insomnia
In the control of muscle spasm as in tetanus
As an anticonvulsant particularly in the management of status epilepticus and febrile convulsion
In the management of alcohol withdrawal symptoms
As a sedative
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Adults
Management of anxiety disorders and relief of symptoms of anxiety : Depending upon the severity of symptoms -2 mg to 10 mg, 2-4 times daily.
For the short-term management of insomnia associated with anxiety : 5-15 mg at bed time.
Adjunctively for relief of skeletal muscle spasm: 2 mg to 10 mg, 3 or 4 times daily.
Adjunctively in convulsive disorders : 2 mg to 10 mg, 2 to 4 times daily.
Symptomatic relief in acute alcohol withdrawal : 10 mg, 3 or 4 times during the first 24 hours reducing to 5 mg 3 or 4 times daily as needed.
As premedicant before dental or minor surgical or
other procedures : 5 to 20 mg as single dose or in divided doses. Children Because of varied response to CNS acting drugs, therapy should be initiated with lowest dose and then increases as required. 1 to 2.5 mg, 3 or 4 times daily initially, increases gradually as needed and tolerated.

SIDE EFFECTS
Frequent and mild drowsiness, light headaches, slight ataxia, vertigo, dry mouth, inattention may occur and are dose dependent. Other effects that may be observed rarely include hypotension, gastrointestinal and visual disturbances. In cases of long term medication change in libido may occur.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Patients with known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines, acute pulmonary insufficiency; respiratory depression, phobic or obsessional states, chronic psychosis.
PRECAUTIONS
Caution should be observed when giving Azepam to elderly or debilitated patients who are liable to be sensitive to its side effects to patients with renal or hepatic dysfunctions and to patients with closed angle glucoma.
USE IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
The use of diazepam during the first trimester of pregnancy should almost always be avoided as it bears a risk of congenital malfomation. Significant amounts of this medicine may pass into breast milk. It should not be used by lactating mothers as it may be harmful to the nursing infant.
USE IN CHILDREN
lt is not recommended for infants under six months of age and especially not for premature infants. lt is used in children for the same indications as in adults.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Concomitant intake with alcohol is not recommended. Sedation may be increased due to concomitant use of neuroleptics (antipsychotics), hypnotics, sedative antihistamines and CNS depressants e.g., general anesthetics, narcotic analgesics or antidepressants.
Diazepam clearance is increased by concomitant administration of phenobarbitone and is decreased by administration of cimetidine. Omeprazole and isoniazide inhibit diazepam metabolism.
