Overview

Benzapen Injection contains Benzathine Benzylpenicillin, a long-acting penicillin manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is used for the treatment of streptococcal infections, syphilis, and as long-term prophylaxis against recurrent rheumatic fever.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 1.2 million units as a single deep intramuscular injection, or as advised by the physician depending on indication. For rheumatic fever prophylaxis, repeated every 3-4 weeks. Children: dose adjusted according to age and weight.

Interaction

Probenecid may increase and prolong serum penicillin levels. May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; alternative contraception is advised during treatment.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins.

Side Effects

Pain and induration at the injection site. Hypersensitivity reactions ranging from rash to anaphylaxis may occur; anaphylaxis is a rare but serious risk requiring emergency facilities to be available during administration.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Penicillins are generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when indicated; use under medical supervision, particularly for treatment of syphilis in pregnancy.
