Overview

Betameson-CL Cream is a combination topical antifungal-corticosteroid preparation manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC, combining Betamethasone and Clotrimazole.

Indications

Indicated for the topical treatment of inflammatory dermal fungal infections, including Tinea pedis, Tinea cruris, and Tinea corporis.

Pharmacology

Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent effective against pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur, working by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis in the fungal cell membrane, leading to membrane instability and fungal cell death. Betamethasone Dipropionate is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties.

Dosage and Administration

Apply sufficient cream to the affected and surrounding skin areas twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 weeks in Tinea cruris and Tinea corporis, and for 4 weeks in Tinea pedis. Use beyond four weeks is not recommended. Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children below 12 years of age.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients sensitive to any of its components, other corticosteroids, or imidazoles. Also contraindicated in facial rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, perianal and genital pruritus, napkin eruptions, and bacterial or viral skin infections.

Reported adverse reactions include paresthesia, rash, edema, secondary infection, burning, dry skin, and stinging, each occurring in a small percentage of patients.

There is inadequate evidence of safety in pregnancy. The cream should only be used in pregnancy if benefit justifies potential risk, and not extensively or for long periods. Caution should be exercised when treating nursing mothers.

Precautions and Warnings

Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can produce reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression. Pediatric patients may be more susceptible to systemic toxicity due to a larger skin surface to body mass ratio. Discontinue if irritation or sensitization develops.
