Overview
Betameson-N Cream 0.1%+0.5% combines Betamethasone and Neomycin Sulphate, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a topical steroid-antibiotic combination used to treat inflamed skin conditions with secondary bacterial infection.
Indications
This cream is usually useful for the treatment of superficial infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. It is also useful in burns, regeneration of new skin in wounds and ulceration, otitis externa, postoperative infections, neuro-dermatitis and eczema. It may be used as an adjunct to systemic steroid therapy in special kinds of pyoderma.
Pharmacology
Betamethasone is an active topical corticosteroid that produces a rapid response in inflammatory dermatoses and helps psoriasis-type skin diseases. Neomycin Sulfate is a topical broad-spectrum bactericidal aminoglycoside effective against gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens such as Proteus vulgaris and Staphylococcus aureus. The preparation penetrates and distributes effectively, making it useful in hairy and intertriginous areas and for wet skin ulceration.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: Apply to the affected parts of the skin as a thin layer 3 to 4 times daily. In chronic conditions, treatment is withdrawn by gradually decreasing the frequency of application, down to once a week, or as directed by the physician. Children: Not for use in children under 1 year of age. A course of treatment for a child should not normally last more than 5 days unless otherwise directed by a physician.
Interaction
No significant drug interactions have been reported with Betamethasone Valerate BP and Neomycin Sulphate BP Cream/Ointment.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any of its components. Should not be used for otitis externa when the eardrum is perforated, or in skin lesions caused by viral or fungal infections.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated, but prolonged and high-dose use may cause Cushing's syndrome, acne, and thinning and dilatation of blood vessels, particularly with occlusive dressings.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Should not be used extensively during pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
Long-term continuous topical therapy should be avoided as it may produce resistant microorganisms. Use the accurate dose only on infected areas.
Storage Conditions
Keep below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
