Overview
Burna Cream contains Silver Sulfadiazine 1%, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a topical antimicrobial agent used for the prevention and treatment of infections in second- and third-degree burns, and for infected skin lesions and wounds.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a thin layer (approximately 3-5 mm thickness) to the affected area once or twice daily, or as directed by a physician. The burn area should be kept covered with the cream at all times. Clean the area before each application.
Interaction
Concurrent use with other topical agents may reduce efficacy. Systemic absorption of sulfonamide may interact with oral hypoglycaemics, phenytoin, and warfarin in patients with large burn areas.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine or sulfonamides, in premature neonates, and in neonates during the first two months of life. Avoid near term pregnancy due to the risk of kernicterus in the newborn.
Side Effects
Transient burning or stinging sensation on application, skin discolouration, and occasionally allergic reactions. Leukopenia has been reported with extensive use.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid near term (last trimester) and during breastfeeding due to the risk of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia. Use with medical supervision in early pregnancy only if clearly necessary.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only. Monitor for signs of systemic sulfonamide toxicity in patients with large burn areas. Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
Storage Conditions
Store below 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
