Overview
Camlopril 5/10 mg Capsule contains a fixed-dose combination of Amlodipine Besilate and Benazepril Hydrochloride, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It combines a calcium channel blocker and an ACE inhibitor for the management of hypertension in patients who require dual antihypertensive therapy.
Dosage and Administration
Usually 1 capsule once daily, with or without food, or as prescribed by the physician. Dose may be titrated based on blood pressure response.
Interaction
Concomitant use with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or NSAIDs may increase the risk of hyperkalaemia or renal impairment. CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase amlodipine exposure. Avoid grapefruit juice.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema, bilateral renal artery stenosis, pregnancy (second and third trimester), and known hypersensitivity to either component.
Side Effects
Dry cough (ACE inhibitor class effect), peripheral oedema, dizziness, headache, flushing, and rarely angioedema.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Contraindicated in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to risk of foetal harm from the ACE inhibitor component; avoid during breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Monitor renal function and potassium levels, particularly in patients with renal impairment, diabetes, or those on potassium-sparing agents. First dose hypotension may occur, especially in volume-depleted patients.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Camlopril cause a dry cough?
The benazepril (ACE inhibitor) component causes accumulation of bradykinin, which leads to a dry, persistent cough in some patients — a class effect of all ACE inhibitors.
Can it be taken during pregnancy?
No, the ACE inhibitor component is contraindicated in the second and third trimesters as it can cause serious foetal harm; consult your physician about alternatives.
