Overview

Cef-3 100 mg/5 ml Oral Suspension contains Cefixime Trihydrate, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate bacterial infections in children and adults who require liquid formulations, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, otitis media, typhoid, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea.

Dosage and Administration

Children: 8 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in two divided doses. Reconstitute with the volume of water indicated on the label before use; shake well before each administration. Duration of treatment as prescribed by the physician.

Interaction

Concomitant use with carbamazepine may increase carbamazepine levels. Warfarin anticoagulant effect may be potentiated. Probenecid may increase cefixime plasma levels.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins (cross-reactivity possible).

Side Effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, and skin rash. Pseudomembranous colitis is a rare but serious complication.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy only if clearly indicated; small amounts may be excreted in breast milk — use with caution during breastfeeding under physician guidance.

Precautions and Warnings

Reconstituted suspension has a limited shelf life (typically 14 days when refrigerated); discard unused portion after this period. Shake well before each use. Complete the full prescribed course.

Storage Conditions

Store dry powder below 30°C. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2–8°C) and use within 14 days. Keep out of the reach of children.
