Cefotil 250 mg Tablet

Overview

Cefotil 250 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections including lower and upper respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, Lyme disease, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 250–500 mg twice daily for 7–14 days depending on the infection type and severity, as prescribed. Can be taken with or without food; taking with food improves absorption of the axetil ester.

Interaction

Absorption reduced by antacids and H2-blockers. Probenecid increases cefuroxime plasma levels. May enhance anticoagulant effect of warfarin.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins.

Side Effects

Diarrhoea, nausea, headache, and skin rash. Pseudomembranous colitis is a rare but serious side effect.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Considered relatively safe in pregnancy (Category B); may be used if clearly necessary. Small amounts may enter breast milk.

Precautions and Warnings

Swallow tablets whole; do not crush (bitter taste). Complete the full course. Use with caution in penicillin-allergic patients.

Store below 30°C, in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children.
