CEFTRON I.V 500mg Inj.

Overview

Ceftron 500 mg Injection contains Ceftriaxone Sodium, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a broad-spectrum third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic administered by IM or IV injection, used for the treatment of serious bacterial infections including septicaemia, meningitis, pneumonia, abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gonorrhoea in hospital settings.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usual dose 1–2 gm once daily IV or IM; for severe/life-threatening infections up to 4 gm/day may be used. Dosing duration and route as prescribed by the physician. IV infusion should be given over at least 30 minutes.

Interaction

Do not mix with calcium-containing IV solutions (including Ringer's) — precipitation can occur. Avoid in neonates receiving IV calcium. May potentiate warfarin effects.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone, cephalosporins, or penicillins. Contraindicated in neonates with hyperbilirubinaemia, premature neonates, or where calcium-containing solutions are being used.

Side Effects

Pain or phlebitis at injection site, diarrhoea, rash, eosinophilia, and transient elevation of liver enzymes. Biliary sludging may occur with prolonged use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Category B in pregnancy; use only when clearly necessary. Excreted in breast milk at low concentrations.

Precautions and Warnings

Never mix with calcium-containing solutions. For IM injection, reconstitute with 1% lidocaine to reduce pain. Monitor renal and hepatic function with prolonged use.

Storage Conditions

Store dry powder below 25°C, protected from light. Reconstituted solution is stable for 6 hours at room temperature or 24 hours refrigerated.

Can Ceftron be given both intramuscularly and intravenously?
Yes — ceftriaxone can be given by either route; IV is preferred for severe infections, while IM is suitable for outpatient single-dose therapy (e.g. gonorrhoea).

Why is ceftriaxone not mixed with calcium solutions?
