Overview

Cinaron 15 mg Tablet contains Cinnarizine, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It acts as an antihistamine, labyrinthine sedative and peripheral antivasoconstrictor, and is mainly used for the symptomatic treatment of nausea and vertigo due to Meniere's disease and other labyrinthine disturbances, as well as for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness.

Indications

Cinaron is used for cerebral circulatory disorders such as dizziness, tinnitus, vascular headache, fatigue and memory loss due to aging, sequelae of cerebral and cranial trauma, post-apoplectic disorders and migraine. It is also used for peripheral circulatory disorders (intermittent claudication, trophic disturbances, varicose ulcers, cold extremities) and disorders of balance including Meniere's syndrome, vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea and vomiting, and prophylaxis of motion sickness.

Pharmacology

Cinnarizine is a selective calcium antagonist that inhibits the influx of Ca2+ intracellularly, preventing Ca2+ dependent contraction of arterial smooth muscle. This improves vestibular symptoms and prevents peripheral arterial disease. Its anti-vasoconstrictor action is also evident through effects on blood hyperviscosity and an anti-ischaemic effect.

Dosage and Administration

Usual adult dose: 15 to 30 mg three times daily.
Children (5 to 12 years): Half of the adult dose.
Motion sickness: 30 mg two hours before the start of the journey and 15 mg every 8 hours during the journey.
Peripheral arterial diseases: 75 mg two or three times daily.

Interaction

No drug interactions have been seen when administered concomitantly with antihypertensives, diuretics, anticoagulants or hypoglycaemics.

Contraindications

There are no specific contraindications, though it has been found to decrease blood pressure significantly. It should be used with reasonable caution in hypotensive patients.

Side Effects

Somnolence and gastrointestinal disturbances are extremely rare and transient. Allergic skin reactions and fatigue have been reported on rare occasions. Aggravation of extrapyramidal symptoms has been reported extremely rarely in elderly people during prolonged therapy.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of Cinnarizine in human pregnancy has not been established, although animal studies have not shown teratogenic effects. It is therefore not advisable to administer Cinnarizine during pregnancy.

Precautions and Warnings

Cinaron may cause drowsiness; affected patients should not drive or operate machinery. Alcoholic drinks should be avoided.

Storage Conditions

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
