Overview
Ciprocin 250 mg Tablet contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is used for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, gastrointestinal infections, typhoid fever, and gonorrhoea caused by susceptible organisms.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: 250–500 mg twice daily for 7–14 days depending on the type and severity of infection, as prescribed. Can be taken with or without food; drink plenty of fluids during treatment. Swallow tablets whole.
Interaction
Antacids, sucralfate, and iron supplements reduce ciprofloxacin absorption — separate by at least 2 hours. Increases theophylline and warfarin levels; monitor closely. NSAIDs may increase seizure risk. Avoid QT-prolonging agents.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones, history of fluoroquinolone-associated tendon rupture, and generally in children under 18 years (except for specific indications).
Side Effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness are common. Serious effects include tendinitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, QT prolongation, and CNS disturbances. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea may occur.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding; potential risk to foetal/infant cartilage development. Use only when no safer alternative is available.
Precautions and Warnings
Avoid excessive sun or UV exposure (photosensitivity). Maintain adequate hydration. Discontinue and seek care if tendon pain, weakness, or CNS symptoms develop. Use with caution in patients with epilepsy, renal impairment (dose adjustment needed), or QT prolongation risk factors.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should ciprofloxacin be taken with food?
It can be taken with or without food, but dairy products or calcium-fortified juice should not be taken at the same time as they reduce absorption. Drink plenty of water.
Why are antacids not taken with ciprofloxacin?
Antacids containing aluminium, magnesium, or calcium chelate ciprofloxacin in the gut and significantly reduce its absorption; separate by at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after ciprofloxacin.
