DESCRIPTION

COSIUM (Clobazam) is an anxiolytic agent belonging to the class of the benzodiazepine. Cosium is similar to diazepam in actions and uses. Binding of Clobazam to the benzodiazepine receptors potentiates the inhibitory action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) upon the chloride channel, thereby enhancing GABA facilitated, inhibitory synaptic transmission. COSIUM is safer than diazepam because of its less side effects. Peak plasma level of COSIUM is attained within very short time.

COMPOSITION

Each tablet contains Clobazam BP 10 mg.

INDICATIONS

COSIUM is indicated for the relief of acute or chronic anxiety, tension and agitation. COSIUM can also be administered in physical symptoms associated with underlying anxiety and anxiety associated with organic disease and psychosomatic disorders. COSIUM may be used together with antiepileptics in the treatment of epilepsy. COSIUM is also indicated in migraine, phobias,

insomnia and depression .

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Adults : 2 to 3 tablets (20 to 30 mg) daily in divided doses or as a single dose at night. Doses up to 60 mg may be used in severe condition. In epilepsy initially 5 to 15 mg is followed by increased dose of 20 to 30 mg daily, maximum 60 mg daily. Children : Half of the recommended adult dose. COSIUM is not recommended for children under 3 years of age.

SIDE EFFECTS

Side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, dryness of mouth, constipation and anorexia are more likely to occur at the beginning of treatment and often disappear with continued treatment or on reduction of the dose.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Clobazam is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to it and acute pulmonary insufficiency.

PRECAUTIONS

Caution should be taken in respiratory disease, muscle weakness, pregnancy, breast-feeding and in hepatic and renal impairment. Prolonged use and abrupt withdrawal thereafter should be avoided.
