Defaz CI 50 mg+0.50 mg+61.80 mg Capsule (Timed Release)
DESCRIPTION
DEFAZ CI is a combined preparation of carbonyl iron, folic acid and zinc sulfate monohydrate. It contains carbonyl iron with not less than 98% iron content. Carbonyl Iron, having high bioavailability and low toxicity, is safer and more effective choice for iron supplementation.
COMPOSITION
Each capsule contains elemental Iron (as Carbonyl Iron INN) 50 mg, Folic Acid BP 0.5 mg and Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate USP 61.8 mg (equivalent to 22.5 mg Zinc).
INDICATIONS
DEFAZ CI is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency especially during pregnancy and lactation.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
One capsule daily before food. OR AS DIRECTED BY THE PHYSICIAN.
SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and other symptoms of gastrointestinal irritation, such as anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation and diarrhoea are sometimes encountered. Patient may complain about dark stool. DEFAZ CI capsule is designed to reduce the possibility of gastrointestinal irritation. There have been rare reports of allergic reactions.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not use in patients hypersensitive to any ingredient of the product or those with iron overload.
PRECAUTIONS
Use of DEFAZ CI during the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible. Thus administration of Iron during the first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency. Special care should be taken in patients with heaemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, red blood cell aplasia and kidney problem.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Iron and zinc chelate with tetracyclines and absorption of these agents may be impaired. Absorption of iron may be impaired by penicillamine if co-administered with antacids. Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics, so plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone are possibly reduced. In patients with renal failure a risk of zinc accumulation could exist.
OVERDOSAGE
Some complications are observed by regular excessive administration of DEFAZ CI such as nausea, abdominal pain, fever, coma etc.
