DEFIRON I.V 5ml Inj.

Overview

Defiron 100 mg/5 ml Injection contains Iron Sucrose, a parenteral iron preparation manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is used for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in patients who cannot tolerate or fail to respond to oral iron therapy, including patients on haemodialysis, chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and post-partum iron deficiency anaemia.

Dosage and Administration

Administer by slow IV injection (over at least 5 minutes) or IV infusion, as prescribed. Doses calculated based on patient weight, haemoglobin level, and target haemoglobin. Typical dose: 100–200 mg per session.

Interaction

Concomitant oral iron reduces the absorption of the latter; avoid oral iron supplementation during IV iron therapy for at least 5 days.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with iron overload (haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis), hypersensitivity to iron sucrose or any component, anaemia not caused by iron deficiency, and in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Side Effects

Hypotension, nausea, vomiting, and injection site reactions. Serious hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions are possible — facilities for resuscitation must be available. Dizziness and taste disturbance may occur.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid in the first trimester. Use in the second and third trimesters when clinically indicated; iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy is a valid indication with physician oversight.

Precautions and Warnings

Only administer in clinical settings with resuscitation facilities. Observe patient for at least 30 minutes after each dose. Monitor haemoglobin and iron parameters. Do not mix with other IV preparations.

Storage Conditions

Store at room temperature (15–25°C). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Check for particulate matter before use.

Why is iron sucrose given by IV instead of orally for some patients?
Parenteral iron bypasses GI absorption limitations and is used when oral iron is not tolerated, fails to achieve adequate response, or when rapid repletion is needed (e.g. pre-surgery, dialysis patients).

Can iron sucrose be added to IV drip bags?
Iron sucrose may be diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride only; do not add to other IV solutions or parenteral nutrition without specific pharmaceutical guidance.
