Deflacort 24 mg Tab

Overview

Deflacort 24 mg Tablet contains Deflazacort, an oxazoline derivative of prednisolone with corticosteroid activity, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It has similar anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties to other corticosteroids but with a more favourable metabolic profile (particularly reduced calcium loss and less effect on glucose metabolism). It is used for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, allergic disorders, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel disease, and other conditions requiring corticosteroid therapy.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: dose varies by condition — typically 6–90 mg/day adjusted as needed, prescribed as a single morning dose or in divided doses. For maintenance, use the lowest effective dose. 24 mg tablets allow precise dose titration.

Interaction

May reduce efficacy of antidiabetic agents (hyperglycaemia). NSAIDs increase GI risk. Vaccines may have reduced immunogenicity. Enzyme inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin) reduce deflazacort efficacy. Increases risk of hypokalaemia with diuretics.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in systemic infections (unless adequate antimicrobial cover), known hypersensitivity to deflazacort, and live vaccines during immunosuppressive doses.

Side Effects

Short-term: insomnia, euphoria, increased appetite, and fluid retention. Long-term: osteoporosis, adrenal suppression, hyperglycaemia, Cushingoid features, growth retardation in children, cataracts, and increased infection susceptibility.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use with caution during pregnancy; may cause adrenal suppression in the neonate. Use the lowest effective dose. Not recommended during breastfeeding at high doses.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not stop abruptly after prolonged use — taper dose gradually to prevent adrenal crisis. Take with food to reduce GI side effects. Monitor blood glucose, blood pressure, and bone density with long-term use.
