Deprex 5 mg Tablet

Overview

Deprex 5 mg Tablet contains Olanzapine, an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Olanzapine acts on multiple neurotransmitter receptors (dopamine D2, serotonin 5-HT2A, and others) and is used for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute mania in bipolar disorder, and as maintenance therapy in bipolar disorder. It may also be used as an adjunct in treatment-resistant depression.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: for schizophrenia — typically 5–10 mg once daily; for acute mania — typically 10–15 mg once daily; adjust as prescribed. May be taken with or without food. Starting dose is usually 5 mg.

Interaction

Avoid combination with other CNS depressants (additive sedation). Carbamazepine and smoking reduce olanzapine levels. Fluvoxamine increases levels. Alcohol potentiates sedative effects. Avoid with QT-prolonging drugs.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma and known hypersensitivity to olanzapine.

Side Effects

Weight gain, somnolence, hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia, constipation, dry mouth, orthostatic hypotension, and extrapyramidal symptoms (less than first-generation antipsychotics). Metabolic syndrome is a significant long-term concern.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use only when benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy; neonates may experience withdrawal symptoms. Use with caution during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Monitor fasting blood glucose, lipids, and weight regularly. Counsel patients on diabetes risk. Do not stop abruptly — taper under physician guidance. Use with caution in elderly patients with dementia (increased mortality risk).
