Overview

Dexonex 0.5 mg Tablet contains Dexamethasone, a potent synthetic corticosteroid manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Dexamethasone has approximately 25–30 times the glucocorticoid activity of hydrocortisone with minimal mineralocorticoid activity. It is used for severe allergic reactions, inflammatory conditions (arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease), oedema, asthma exacerbations, adrenal insufficiency, cerebral oedema, and as part of oncology supportive care.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 0.5–9 mg/day in divided doses depending on the condition; maintenance at the lowest effective dose. For cerebral oedema: higher doses under specialist care.

Interaction

NSAIDs increase GI ulceration risk. Reduces efficacy of antidiabetic agents. Live vaccines should be avoided. Enzyme inducers (rifampicin, phenytoin) reduce dexamethasone levels. Increases effects of hypokalaemia-causing drugs.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in systemic infections without adequate antimicrobial therapy, live virus vaccination, known hypersensitivity to dexamethasone.

Side Effects

Short-term: insomnia, mood changes, increased appetite, hyperglycaemia. Long-term: Cushingoid features, osteoporosis, growth suppression, adrenal suppression, cataracts, peptic ulcer.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use with caution in pregnancy; crosses the placenta. May be given deliberately to enhance foetal lung maturity pre-term. Avoid during breastfeeding at high doses.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not stop abruptly after prolonged use. Take with food. Monitor blood glucose, blood pressure, and bone density. Avoid live vaccines. Alert healthcare providers to corticosteroid use before surgery.

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
