Overview

Duolax Oral Emulsion contains Magnesium Hydroxide 300 mg and Liquid Paraffin 1.25 ml per 5 ml, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a combination laxative providing dual action: Magnesium Hydroxide acts as an osmotic laxative — drawing water into the intestines to soften stools and stimulate bowel movement — while Liquid Paraffin acts as a lubricant laxative, coating and softening the faecal mass to ease passage. Used for the short-term relief of constipation and bowel preparation.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 30–45 ml (6–9 teaspoonfuls) at bedtime or as directed by the physician. Children above 6 years: 15–20 ml or as prescribed. Shake the bottle well before use. Take with a full glass of water.

Interaction

May reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) if liquid paraffin is taken with meals. Do not use concomitantly with stool softeners or other laxatives without physician advice. Antacids may reduce magnesium absorption.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal conditions, rectal bleeding of unknown cause, severe renal impairment (risk of hypermagnesaemia), children under 6 years, and known hypersensitivity to any component.

Side Effects

Diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and electrolyte imbalance with prolonged use. Liquid paraffin may cause anal seepage or irritation with prolonged use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy unless specifically recommended by a physician. Not recommended during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Not for prolonged use — laxatives may cause dependency and electrolyte imbalance if used long-term. If constipation persists beyond 1 week, consult a physician. Do not take at the same time as meals.
