Strength: 1 mg/mL

Rupatadine is a selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist with additional platelet-activating factor (PAF) antagonist activity. It provides dual-action anti-allergic activity with a low propensity for sedation and no significant cardiac effects.

Indications

  • Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (sneezing, itchy and runny nose, nasal congestion)
  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria (itching and skin weals)
  • Allergic conjunctivitis

Dosage & Administration

Adults and children ≥12 years: 10 mL (10 mg) once daily. Children 2–11 years: 2.5 mL–5 mL once daily based on weight. Take with or without food.

Contraindications & Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity to rupatadine or excipients
  • Caution with CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, erythromycin) — may increase rupatadine levels
  • Caution in severe hepatic and renal impairment
  • Not recommended in pregnancy; use with caution during lactation
  • Avoid alcohol (potentiated CNS depression)

Side Effects

Common: somnolence, headache, fatigue. Uncommon: dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain. Rare: tachycardia, palpitations.

Drug Interactions

Ketoconazole and erythromycin increase rupatadine AUC. CNS depressants and alcohol potentiate sedation. Grapefruit juice may increase plasma levels.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
