Overview

Emolent 3%+8% Lotion contains White Soft Paraffin 3% and Liquid Paraffin 8%, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. This emollient lotion forms an occlusive layer on the skin that reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), maintaining skin hydration. It is used for dry, scaly, and itchy skin conditions including eczema (atopic dermatitis), ichthyosis, psoriasis (as an adjunct), and other dry skin disorders. The lighter lotion formulation is easier to apply and is suited for larger body areas.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children: apply liberally to affected areas 2–3 times daily, or as frequently as needed. Can be used as a soap substitute — apply and rinse off without rubbing.

Interaction

No significant drug interactions with topical emollients.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to any component.

Side Effects

Generally very well tolerated. Occasional local skin reactions in sensitive individuals. May cause slippery surfaces in the bath or shower — use with care.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Generally safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding — topical emollients with paraffin are widely used. Avoid application to the breast just before breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Keep away from fire and naked flames — paraffin-containing emollients increase fire risk of fabrics (dressings, clothing, bedding). Use soap alternatives freely and generously for best effect.

Storage Conditions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should emollient lotion be applied?
Emollients should be applied as often as possible — at least 2–3 times daily — and ideally within 3 minutes of bathing (while skin is still slightly damp) to maximise moisture retention.

Is this lotion suitable for children with eczema?
Yes — paraffin-based emollients are among the safest and most recommended first-line treatments for childhood atopic eczema; they restore the skin barrier and reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups.
