Overview

Entacyd Suspension contains Aluminium Hydroxide 175 mg and Magnesium Hydroxide 225 mg per 5 ml, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. This combination antacid neutralises excess gastric acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to raise the gastric pH. Aluminium hydroxide has a constipating effect while magnesium hydroxide has a mild laxative effect — together they tend to balance each other's GI effects. Used for symptomatic relief of acid-related disorders including dyspepsia, gastric and duodenal ulcers, heartburn, oesophagitis, and hiatus hernia.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoonfuls) 20–60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as prescribed. Shake well before use. Do not take within 2 hours of other oral medications.

Interaction

Antacids reduce absorption of many drugs — take other medications at least 2 hours before or after Entacyd. Particularly affects: tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, ketoconazole, thyroid hormones, and bisphosphonates.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (risk of aluminium and magnesium accumulation), hypophosphataemia, and known hypersensitivity to any component.

Side Effects

Constipation (aluminium) and diarrhoea (magnesium) effects tend to balance. Prolonged high-dose use may cause aluminium toxicity (in renal impairment), hypermagnesaemia, or hypophosphataemia.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Antacids are generally considered safe for short-term use in pregnancy under physician guidance. Avoid prolonged high-dose use.

Precautions and Warnings

Shake well before use. Do not use continuously for more than 2 weeks without physician review. Space 2 hours from other medications. Avoid prolonged use in patients with kidney problems.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C. Shake well before use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should antacids not be taken at the same time as other medicines?
Antacids alter gastric pH and can bind to many drugs in the gut, significantly reducing their absorption and effectiveness; maintaining a 2-hour separation preserves the action of both the antacid and the other medication.

How quickly does Entacyd Suspension work?
Liquid antacid suspensions typically start neutralising gastric acid within 1–5 minutes of administration; effects last 20–40 minutes on an empty stomach and up to 2–3 hours when taken after meals.
