Overview

Eprim 500 mg Soft Gelatin Capsule contains Evening Primrose Oil, a rich natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — an omega-6 essential fatty acid — manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. GLA is a precursor to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which has anti-inflammatory, anti-aggregant, and vasodilatory properties. Evening primrose oil is used for premenstrual syndrome (PMS), mastalgia (cyclical breast pain), eczema and atopic dermatitis (as an adjunct), and menopausal symptoms. It is also used to support skin health and hormonal balance.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 2–4 capsules (1,000–2,000 mg) daily with meals, or as directed by the physician. For mastalgia and PMS: typically 3 g/day in divided doses. For eczema: 4–8 g/day for 3–6 months under physician guidance.

Interaction

May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and antiplatelet drugs — monitor INR and watch for increased bleeding. May interact with phenothiazine antipsychotics (theoretical risk of lowering seizure threshold). Use with caution alongside blood-thinning supplements.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to evening primrose oil. Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or those at risk of seizures. Caution in patients on anticoagulants.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. Mild and transient nausea, headache, and soft stools may occur. Rarely, skin reactions.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Limited clinical safety data in pregnancy — avoid during pregnancy as a precaution (GLA may promote uterine contractions). Use during breastfeeding with physician guidance.

Precautions and Warnings

Take with meals to improve absorption and minimise GI discomfort. Inform physician if taking blood thinners. Allow 3–6 months to see full benefit for chronic conditions.

Storage Conditions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GLA and why is it important in evening primrose oil?
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid that many people cannot efficiently synthesise from linoleic acid; GLA is converted in the body to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which reduces inflammation and hormonal sensitivity — making evening primrose oil effective for PMS and mastalgia.

How long should evening primrose oil be taken for PMS?
Full benefits for PMS and cyclical breast pain are usually seen after 3–6 months of continuous daily supplementation; patients should not judge efficacy based on a trial of less than 2–3 months.
