Overview

Equra 10% Cream contains Urea 10% w/w, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Urea is a natural constituent of the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF). At 10% concentration, it acts primarily as a humectant and emollient — attracting water into the stratum corneum and promoting skin hydration. At higher concentrations, urea has additional keratolytic (skin-softening) activity. Equra 10% Cream is used for dry, rough, and scaly skin conditions including xerosis, ichthyosis, eczema, psoriasis, and diabetic foot skin care.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin layer to the affected dry or rough skin areas once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician. Massage gently until absorbed. May be used under occlusion for hyperkeratotic (very thickened) areas.

Interaction

No clinically significant drug interactions with topical urea at this concentration.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to any component. Avoid use on broken or acutely inflamed skin.

Side Effects

Mild stinging or burning on initial application to very dry or cracked skin — usually transient. Occasional local irritation in sensitive individuals.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Generally considered safe for topical use in pregnancy and breastfeeding at prescribed doses.

Precautions and Warnings

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do not apply to open wounds or severely broken skin. For diabetic patients using urea on feet: continue regular foot examinations.

Storage Conditions

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from freezing. Keep out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes urea an effective moisturiser for very dry skin?
Urea is both a humectant (attracts and retains water in the skin) and a mild keratolytic at higher concentrations; at 10%, it primarily draws moisture into the stratum corneum, softening thickened, dry skin without the irritation of stronger keratolytics.

Is Equra 10% Cream suitable for diabetic foot care?
Yes — urea creams are commonly used in diabetic foot care to treat xerosis and callus formation; however, they should not be applied to open wounds or ulcers, and regular professional diabetic foot reviews remain essential.
