Overview

Flurizin 10mg Tablet contains Flunarizine, a selective calcium entry blocker with potent antihistaminic properties used primarily for migraine prophylaxis. Flunarizine acts by blocking calcium influx into cells during ischemia and by preventing vasospasm of cerebral vessels, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. It also exerts beneficial effects in vestibular vertigo by improving blood flow to the inner ear, and in peripheral vascular disease by enhancing peripheral circulation.

Dosage and Administration

Migraine Prophylaxis: Adults under 65 years — 10 mg once daily at night. Adults over 65 years — 5 mg once daily. After improvement, a maintenance schedule of 5 days per week is recommended (omitting 2 consecutive days). Vestibular Vertigo: 10–20 mg/day in adults. Peripheral Vascular Disease: 10 mg twice daily. Treatment should be re-evaluated after 3 months. If no benefit is observed within 2 months, treatment should be discontinued. Do not exceed recommended doses.

Interaction

Oral contraceptives may increase the risk of galactorrhoea during flunarizine therapy. Carbamazepine and phenytoin increase the metabolism of flunarizine, potentially reducing its efficacy — dose adjustment may be needed. Flunarizine may enhance the sedative effects of CNS depressants, alcohol, and sedative medications. Avoid concurrent use with other calcium channel blockers unless under medical supervision.

Contraindications

Flurizin 10mg is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to flunarizine or related compounds. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of depression, pre-existing Parkinson's disease, or other extrapyramidal disorders. Contraindicated in patients with pre-existing signs of tardive dyskinesia.

Side Effects

Common: drowsiness and fatigue (most prominent in early treatment), weight gain, increased appetite. With long-term use: depression (may emerge after several months), extrapyramidal symptoms (parkinsonism, tardive dyskinesia) particularly in elderly patients. Rare: heartburn, nausea, insomnia, dry mouth, galactorrhoea. Discontinue immediately if depression or extrapyramidal symptoms develop.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of flunarizine during pregnancy has not been established. Use during pregnancy should be avoided unless clearly necessary and the benefit outweighs the risk. It is not known whether flunarizine is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised during lactation.

Precautions and Warnings

Monitor for signs of depression, particularly in patients with a personal or family history of depressive illness. Discontinue treatment if depression develops. Monitor elderly patients closely for extrapyramidal adverse effects, as they are at increased risk. Patients should be warned about potential drowsiness, especially when operating machinery or driving. Avoid abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
