Overview

Fungidal Cream (Miconazole Nitrate 2% w/w) is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent effective against dermatophytes, yeasts (including Candida species), and certain gram-positive bacteria. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to cell death. Fungidal Cream is used for the treatment of fungal skin infections including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea manuum, cutaneous candidiasis, tinea versicolor, and otitis externa caused by susceptible organisms.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area and surrounding skin twice daily (morning and evening). Gently rub in until absorbed. For tinea pedis, treat for at least one month. For other tinea infections, treat for 2–5 weeks. For cutaneous candidiasis and tinea versicolor, treat for 2–4 weeks. For otitis externa, apply to the ear canal twice daily. Continue treatment for at least 1 week after symptoms resolve to prevent relapse. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.

Interaction

Topical miconazole may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin when applied over large body surface areas; monitor INR if used concurrently. Topical interactions are generally minimal compared to systemic formulations.

Contraindications

Fungidal Cream is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to miconazole nitrate or any component of the formulation. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Not for ophthalmic use.

Side Effects

Local reactions at the application site include mild transient burning, stinging, itching, or redness, particularly at the start of treatment. Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported rarely. Discontinue use if severe irritation or hypersensitivity reactions occur.
