Overview

Giloba 60 mg Capsule contains Ginkgo Biloba extract, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a herbal preparation used to support cerebral circulation, memory, and peripheral vascular conditions.

Indications

Giloba is used for cerebral insufficiency (memory deficit, depression, attention and memory loss associated with Alzheimer's disease and multi-infarct dementia), vertigo and tinnitus of vascular and involutional origin, and improvement of pain-free walking distance in peripheral arterial occlusive disease (intermittent claudication) as part of a physical therapy regimen. It may also help in acute cochlear deafness, SSRI-associated sexual dysfunction, and as a protective measure in hypoxia.

Pharmacology

Ginkgo Biloba inhibits the binding of platelet-activating factor (PAF) to platelets, resulting in reduced platelet aggregation and increased blood fluidity. It improves cognition, working memory, short-term visual memory in dementia, social functioning, concentration, attention, and tinnitus symptoms in people with dementia, and supports mood and sleep in older individuals.

Dosage and Administration

The usual dose of Ginkgo Biloba 60 mg is 1 or 2 capsules daily, or as advised by the physician.

Interaction

Ginkgo Biloba should be used with caution in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet agents such as warfarin, heparin, and aspirin, due to an increased bleeding potential.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with bleeding disorders, particularly with chronic use (6-12 months) or before elective surgery, and in patients with known risk factors for intracranial hemorrhage.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon at recommended doses. Rarely reported effects include headache, dizziness, palpitation, gastrointestinal disturbances, bleeding disorders, and skin hypersensitivity reactions. Higher than recommended doses may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, and weakness.

Precautions and Warnings

Inform your doctor before taking Giloba if you are allergic to it, or have bleeding problems, seizures, convulsions, or epilepsy. Giloba may decrease the blood's ability to clot; discontinue at least 2 weeks before surgery. Not recommended for children under 12 years.
