IVERA 6 mg — Composition & Pharmacology

Generic Name: Ivermectin
Manufacturer: Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
Drug Class: Antiparasitic Agent (Macrocyclic Lactone)
Dosage Form: Tablet
Strength: 6 mg

Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent derived from avermectin. It selectively binds to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, causing hyperpolarization and paralysis of parasites. It also potentiates GABA-mediated neurotransmission in parasites.

Indications

  • Onchocerciasis (river blindness) — treatment and control
  • Strongyloidiasis (intestinal nematode infection)
  • Scabies (including crusted/Norwegian scabies)
  • Head lice (pediculosis capitis)
  • Lymphatic filariasis (as part of mass drug administration)

Dosage & Administration

Adults (body weight-based): 200 mcg/kg as a single oral dose. For 6 mg: approx 70–90 kg body weight. Take on an empty stomach with water. Repeat dosing may be required depending on indication.

Contraindications & Precautions

  • Hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any excipient
  • Caution in patients with Loa loa co-infection (risk of encephalopathy)
  • Pregnancy: use only if potential benefit justifies risk
  • Avoid in children weighing less than 15 kg

Side Effects

Mazzotti reaction (fever, pruritus, rash, edema — especially in onchocerciasis treatment). CNS: dizziness, somnolence, headache. GI: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

Drug Interactions

Warfarin: ivermectin may enhance anticoagulant effect — monitor INR. P-glycoprotein inhibitors: may increase ivermectin CNS levels.

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
