Overview

Fexo 180 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a selective second-generation H1 antihistamine manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. Fexofenadine is the active metabolite of terfenadine and selectively blocks peripheral H1 receptors without significant CNS penetration, making it essentially non-sedating. It is used for symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever), perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children over 12 years: 180 mg once daily with water. Take on an empty stomach for best absorption. Do not take with fruit juices (grapefruit, apple, orange juice — reduces absorption by up to 36%).

Interaction

Erythromycin and ketoconazole increase fexofenadine plasma levels (less clinically significant than with terfenadine). Aluminium and magnesium antacids reduce absorption — take 2 hours apart. Fruit juices (grapefruit, apple, orange) significantly reduce bioavailability — take with water only.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.

Side Effects

Headache and drowsiness (rare — much less than older antihistamines). Nausea, dizziness, and dysmenorrhoea occasionally reported. Unlike older antihistamines, minimal anticholinergic effects.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy not fully established — avoid unless benefit clearly outweighs risk. Fexofenadine passes into breast milk; avoid during breastfeeding or use under physician guidance.

Precautions and Warnings

Take with water — not with juice. No significant impairment of driving ability at recommended doses, though individual responses may vary. Reduce dose in renal impairment.
