Nystat Tab
DESCRIPTION
Nystatin is an antifungal antibiotic that is both fungistatic and fungicidal in vitro against a variety of yeasts and yeast-like fungi. It is a Polyene antibiotic that is obtained from Streptomyces noursei.
COMPOSITION
Tablet : Each film-coated tablet contains Nystatin BP 500000 units.
Suspension : Each ml suspension contains Nystatin BP 100000 units.
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Nystatin exerts its antifungal effects by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane to produce a change in membrane permeability which allows loss of essential cellular constituents. It has no effect on protozoa, bacteria or virus. Absorption of Nystatin from the gastro-intestinal tract is negligible when administered orally and is excreted in the faeces almost entirely as unchanged drug.
INDICATIONS
Nystatin is used for the prevention and treatment of candidal infection of the oral cavity, oesophagus and intestinal tract caused by candida albicans, it provides effective prophylaxis against oral candidiasis in those born of mothers with vaginal candidiasis.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
INFANTS : 2 ml (200,000 units nystatin) four times daily (1 ml. in each side of mouth).
CHILDREN AND ADULTS : 4 to 6 ml (400,000 to 600,000 units nystatin) four times daily (one half of dose in each side of mouth). The preparation should be retained in the mouth as long as possible before swallowing.
For the treatment of intestinal or oesophageal candidiasis 500000 units (1 tablet) by mouth 3 or 4 times daily. The dose may be doubled, if required.
For prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis in adults 1000000 units (2 tablets) daily.
Treatment should generally be continued for at least 48 hours after clinical cure to prevent relapse.
