Overview

Minoxidil topical solution is used externally on the scalp to treat male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) at the crown/vertex area.

Mechanism of Action

Minoxidil is believed to work through vasodilation of microcirculation around hair follicles, direct stimulation of follicle cells into a proliferative phase, and reactivation of resting follicles into the growth phase.

Indications

Indicated for male androgenetic alopecia on the top of the scalp (vertex) and female androgenetic alopecia on the top of the scalp.

Dosage and Administration

For 2% solution: apply 1 mL (about 7 sprays) twice daily directly to the affected scalp area, not exceeding 2 mL (40 mg) per day. For 5% solution: apply 1 mL (about 7 sprays) twice daily in the same manner. For external scalp use only.

Contraindications

Not for use on a scalp that is red, inflamed, infected, irritated, or sunburned; not intended for non-scalp hair loss.

Side Effects

Common effects include scalp itching, dryness, or irritation; in some cases unwanted facial or body hair growth from accidental contact has been reported.

Drug Interactions

Avoid combining with other topical scalp products unless advised by a physician, as this may affect absorption or increase irritation.

Special Precautions

For external use only — avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, or mucous membranes; wash hands after application. Visible results typically take several months of consistent use.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from heat and open flame, as the solution may be flammable due to its alcohol content. Keep out of reach of children.
