Overview

Tycil 125mg/5ml Suspension is the standard-strength paediatric amoxicillin suspension from Beximco, delivering 125 mg of Amoxicillin Trihydrate per 5 mL after reconstitution. The 100 mL bottle is sufficient for most standard paediatric antibiotic courses. Amoxicillin suspension is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics for children worldwide and in Bangladesh, used first-line for ear infections (otitis media), respiratory tract infections, and skin infections. The flavoured suspension is generally well-accepted by children.

Reconstitution: Add cooled boiled water to the powder in the bottle in two portions (as marked on label), shaking well between additions. Shake vigorously until completely dissolved. Always use the oral measuring syringe — not a household teaspoon.

Indications (Paediatric)

  • Acute Otitis Media (AOM) — most common paediatric indication; first-line therapy
  • Acute Bacterial Sinusitis
  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia — mild, outpatient
  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis — S. pyogenes; 10-day course prevents rheumatic fever
  • Urinary Tract Infections — children (susceptible organisms)
  • Skin & Soft Tissue Infections — impetigo, cellulitis

After Reconstitution

  • Reconstituted suspension is stable for 7 days at room temperature or 14 days refrigerated
  • Shake well before every use
  • Discard after the course or stability period — do not save for later
  • Do NOT freeze

Side Effects

  • GI: Diarrhoea (common in children), nausea — giving with food or milk reduces GI upset
  • Skin: Non-allergic maculopapular rash (especially with concurrent viral infection — not a true allergy)
  • Rare: Urticaria (true allergic rash), anaphylaxis (very rare)
  • Other: Oral thrush (candidiasis) with prolonged courses

Storage (Before Reconstitution)

  • Store dry powder below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Q1: How do I know if my child needs Tycil 125mg/5ml or Tycil DS 250mg/5ml?
Your physician prescribes based on the severity of infection and your child's weight. Standard infections (ear, throat, skin) typically use 25mg/kg/day (use Tycil 125mg/5ml). Severe infections, resistant organisms, or higher-weight children may need 50mg/kg/day (use Tycil DS for smaller volume). Both products contain the same antibiotic — DS just requires a smaller volume to deliver the same dose.

Q2: My child spit out the medicine — should I re-dose?
If the dose was clearly not swallowed within 1–2 minutes, you may give a replacement dose. If unsure how much was absorbed, do not give a full replacement dose to avoid overdosing — simply continue the next scheduled dose at the normal time and consult your pharmacist or physician.

Q3: Can I store the leftover suspension for next time my child is sick?
No. Reconstituted amoxicillin suspension is only stable for 7 days at room temperature (14 days refrigerated). After the course ends, discard any remaining suspension. Do not store for future use — the medicine will degrade and lose potency.
