Overview

Tycil 500mg is the standard adult-dose formulation of Beximco's Amoxicillin Trihydrate, containing 500 mg per capsule. Amoxicillin 500mg three times daily (TDS) is the most commonly prescribed oral antibiotic regimen in Bangladesh for a wide range of bacterial infections, including community-acquired respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, skin infections, and H. pylori eradication. Its excellent oral bioavailability (~93%), broad spectrum, safety profile, and affordability make it a cornerstone of outpatient antimicrobial therapy. The 500mg dose provides higher peak tissue concentrations than 250mg, making it more appropriate for moderate infections or in larger adults.

Special Note for Diabetic Patients

Amoxicillin is highly safe in diabetic patients. No blood glucose effects, no interactions with metformin, insulin, sulfonylureas, SGLT-2 inhibitors, or other diabetes medications. Diabetic patients with UTI (common complication) or respiratory infections can safely use Tycil 500mg. Note: in diabetics with recurrent UTIs or resistant organisms, urine culture and sensitivity is advisable before treating empirically with amoxicillin (resistance rates to amoxicillin vary regionally).

Side Effects

  • GI (most common): Diarrhoea (9%), nausea, vomiting — take with food to reduce
  • Skin: Non-allergic maculopapular rash (especially with EBV — not a true allergy); urticaria (true allergy, less common)
  • Serious: Anaphylaxis (<0.05%); C. difficile colitis (rare)
  • Oral/vaginal: Candidiasis (thrush) with prolonged courses — probiotic co-administration may reduce risk

Storage

  • Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

Q1: Is amoxicillin effective for COVID-19 or viral infections?
No. Amoxicillin — like all antibiotics — is only effective against bacterial infections, not viruses. It does not treat COVID-19, influenza, common cold, or other viral illnesses. Prescribing antibiotics for viral infections contributes to antibiotic resistance. Use Tycil 500mg only for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections under physician guidance.

Q2: My UTI keeps coming back — can I just take amoxicillin again?
Recurring UTIs should be investigated with urine culture and sensitivity testing before repeating antibiotic treatment. Amoxicillin resistance in E. coli (the most common UTI pathogen) is significant in Bangladesh — empirical retreatment with amoxicillin may fail if the organism is resistant. Your physician may prescribe a different antibiotic based on sensitivity results.

Q3: Can Tycil 500mg be used for H. pylori treatment?
Yes — amoxicillin 1g (2 capsules of 500mg) twice daily is a key component of standard H. pylori triple therapy (PPI + amoxicillin + clarithromycin) for 7–14 days. H. pylori causes peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis. Your gastroenterologist will prescribe the complete regimen.
