Overview

Amodis IV Infusion contains Metronidazole 0.5% w/v, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is indicated for the treatment of serious anaerobic infections including septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, brain abscess, and post-operative wound infections, as well as for surgical prophylaxis, when oral therapy is not feasible.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children over 12 years: Infuse 500 mg every 8 hours at a rate of 5 ml/minute; maximum 4 g should not be exceeded during a 24-hour period. Treatment for 7 days is usually sufficient. Children under 12 years: 7.5 mg/kg body weight per day every 8 hours at the same infusion rate. Requires no dilution and should not be mixed with other drugs prior to administration.

Interaction

Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol; potentiates warfarin's anticoagulant effect; increases lithium and cyclosporin levels; phenytoin and phenobarbital may reduce its plasma levels.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.

Side Effects

Metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, and rashes. Local reactions such as phlebitis may occur at the infusion site.

Pregnancy and Lactation

US FDA Pregnancy Category B. Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution in patients with hepatic encephalopathy; dosage reduction may be needed. May darken urine. Prolonged use requires monitoring of leucocyte count and neurological status.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date.
