Overview

Brofex Syrup contains Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a centrally-acting antitussive used for the temporary relief of dry, non-productive cough caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation associated with the common cold or inhaled irritants.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 ml every 4 hours, or as advised by the physician, not to exceed the maximum daily dose. Children 6-12 years: 5-10 ml every 4 hours. Not generally recommended for children under 6 years without medical advice.

Interaction

Should not be taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) due to risk of serotonin syndrome. Concomitant use with other CNS depressants (sedatives, alcohol) may increase drowsiness.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan, and in those taking MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.

Side Effects

Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and gastrointestinal disturbance. Rarely, confusion or excitability at high doses.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly necessary and under medical advice, as safety data are limited.

Precautions and Warnings

Should not be used for persistent or chronic cough, or cough accompanied by excessive phlegm, without medical evaluation. Use with caution in patients with respiratory conditions or impaired hepatic function.
