Overview

Caberol Tablet contains Cabergoline, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is a long-acting dopamine D2 receptor agonist used in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia (idiopathic or due to pituitary prolactinomas), inhibition of physiological lactation, and also in the management of Parkinson's disease.

Dosage and Administration

For hyperprolactinemia: usual starting dose 0.5 mg per week (as a single dose or divided into two doses), with gradual titration based on serum prolactin levels, as prescribed by the physician. Should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

Interaction

Dopamine antagonists (e.g., antipsychotics, metoclopramide, domperidone) may reduce the efficacy of cabergoline. Use with caution alongside antihypertensive agents. Avoid concomitant use with other ergot alkaloids.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in uncontrolled hypertension, hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids, cardiac valvular disorders, pulmonary or retroperitoneal fibrotic disorders, and a history of puerperal psychosis.

Side Effects

Nausea, headache, dizziness, postural hypotension, constipation, and fatigue. Cardiac valvulopathy, fibrotic reactions, and impulse control disorders have been reported with prolonged high-dose use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Discontinue at least one month before a planned pregnancy. Not recommended during breastfeeding, as it suppresses lactation; use only if clearly indicated and under medical supervision.

Precautions and Warnings

Cardiac valvular and fibrotic changes have been associated with ergot-derived dopamine agonists; periodic cardiac monitoring is advised with prolonged therapy. Monitor blood pressure, particularly at initiation. First dose should ideally be taken at bedtime to minimize hypotensive effects.
