Overview
Dyvon Plus 0.05%+0.005% Ointment contains Betamethasone Dipropionate 0.05% and Calcipotriol Monohydrate 0.005%, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. This combination provides dual anti-psoriatic action: Betamethasone suppresses the inflammatory response of psoriatic plaques while Calcipotriol normalises abnormal keratinocyte proliferation. The combination is more effective than either agent alone and allows use of a lower steroid dose than monotherapy.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: apply once daily to the affected area. Maximum 100 g per week and 4 weeks of continuous use. Do not apply to the face or scalp. Wash hands after use.
Interaction
Betamethasone may potentiate hypokalaemia with thiazide diuretics. Calcipotriol interactions with calcium metabolism drugs apply. Avoid concurrent use with other topical steroids on the same area.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, perianal and genital pruritus, viral (herpes, varicella) skin infections, tuberculosis of skin, and known hypersensitivity to any component.
Side Effects
Local: skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, folliculitis. Systemic effects possible with prolonged or occlusive use: adrenal suppression, hyperglycaemia. Hypercalcaemia if maximum weekly dose exceeded.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy — topical steroids in significant amounts carry risk of intrauterine growth restriction. Avoid breastfeeding application to breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
Use for the shortest effective period — limit to 4 weeks continuous use. Do not use under occlusion. Monitor calcium levels with prolonged use. Never use on the face.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the advantage of combining betamethasone with calcipotriol?
The anti-inflammatory action of betamethasone provides rapid symptom relief while calcipotriol normalises keratinocyte turnover; the combination is more effective than either alone and may allow a lower steroid dose, reducing long-term steroid side effects.
Can Dyvon Plus ointment be used on the scalp?
The scalp formulation is Dyvon Plus suspension (scalp solution); the ointment is for plaques on the body. Do not apply ointment to the face.
