Overview

Anleptic Suspension contains Carbamazepine, manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is an anticonvulsant used in the treatment of epilepsy (partial and generalized tonic-clonic seizures), trigeminal neuralgia, and as a mood stabilizer in certain psychiatric conditions, suitable for paediatric and patients unable to swallow tablets.

Dosage and Administration

Children up to 1 year: 100-200 mg daily in divided doses. Children 1-5 years: 200-400 mg daily. Children 5-10 years: 400-600 mg daily. Adults: initially 100-200 mg once or twice daily, gradually increased to a maintenance dose of 800-1200 mg daily in divided doses, as advised by the physician.

Interaction

Carbamazepine induces hepatic enzymes and may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, warfarin, and other anticonvulsants. Concomitant use with MAO inhibitors is contraindicated. Erythromycin and certain antifungals may increase carbamazepine levels.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Carbamazepine or tricyclic compounds, history of bone marrow depression, and atrioventricular block.

Side Effects

Dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision, especially at the start of treatment. Rarely, blood dyscrasias and skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome may occur.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Associated with risk of congenital malformations; use during pregnancy only if benefits outweigh risks. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function is recommended during long-term therapy. Should be withdrawn gradually to avoid precipitating seizures.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, protected from light. Do not refrigerate. Keep out of the reach of children.
