What is Beuflox?
Beuflox is a brand of Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is bactericidal and effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive aerobic bacteria.
Indications
Beuflox 500mg tablet is indicated for the treatment of: Acute uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections; Respiratory tract infections including acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia; Skin and soft tissue infections; Bone and joint infections; Infectious diarrhoea and typhoid fever; Uncomplicated gonorrhoea; Prophylaxis of meningococcal disease.
Pharmacology
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination. The bactericidal effect results from this dual inhibition. It has excellent oral bioavailability (~70–80%) and achieves high tissue concentrations. Half-life is approximately 4–6 hours with renal excretion being the primary route of elimination.

Interaction
Absorption significantly reduced by antacids, sucralfate, and products containing calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminium, or zinc. Ciprofloxacin inhibits CYP1A2 and increases plasma levels of theophylline, clozapine, and tizanidine (concurrent use with tizanidine contraindicated). May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. NSAIDs increase the risk of CNS side effects including convulsions. Dairy products and calcium-fortified juices may reduce absorption.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any excipient. Concomitant use with tizanidine is contraindicated.
Side Effects
Common: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness. Serious: QT prolongation, tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, hypersensitivity reactions, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
FDA Pregnancy Category C. Ciprofloxacin is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risk. Excreted in breast milk — not recommended during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, especially in patients over 60, those on corticosteroids, or those with organ transplants. May cause peripheral neuropathy — discontinue if symptoms of pain, burning, or weakness occur. Avoid excessive sun exposure (photosensitivity). Not recommended for use in children and adolescents for routine infections due to risk of arthropathy. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or CNS disorders.
Use in Special Populations
Reduce dose in severe renal impairment (GFR <30 mL/min). Use with caution in hepatic impairment. Safety in children not established for most indications.
Therapeutic Class
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic (4-Quinolone preparations)
