Overview

Cefopen 1 gm/vial contains Cefoperazone Sodium, a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC. It is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, biliary tract infections, peritonitis, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections, endometritis, and gonorrhoea caused by susceptible organisms.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 2–4 g/day in two divided doses; up to 8–12 g/day in severe infections. Administer by IM injection or IV infusion as directed by a physician. Infuse IV doses over 15–60 minutes.

Interaction

May potentiate the effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin; monitor prothrombin time. Concurrent alcohol consumption within 72 hours may cause a disulfiram-like reaction. Aminoglycosides should not be mixed in the same infusion solution.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefoperazone, other cephalosporins, or penicillins.

Side Effects

Pain at injection site, diarrhoea, nausea, hypersensitivity reactions, and elevated liver enzymes. A disulfiram-like reaction may occur if alcohol is consumed.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use only if clearly necessary during pregnancy. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk — use with caution during lactation.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction as dose adjustment may be needed. Monitor for signs of superinfection with prolonged use. Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 72 hours after.

Storage Conditions

Store dry powder below 25°C, protected from light. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or refrigerated and used within 24 hours.
