Overview

Infudex 10% IV Infusion contains Dextrose (Glucose) 10% w/v, a sterile intravenous solution used to treat carbohydrate and fluid depletions. Dextrose is a form of glucose and provides a readily metabolizable source of energy — one litre of 5% solution provides approximately 170 calories. Infudex is administered intravenously to replace water deficiency, treat low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and insulin shock, and to provide nutritional support for patients unable to consume food due to illness, injury, or coma. It is also used in regimens with calcium, bicarbonate, and insulin for emergency management of hyperkalaemia, and as a vehicle for the intravenous infusion of compatible drugs. The 10% concentration is indicated where higher caloric replacement or greater fluid restriction is required compared to the standard 5% solution.

Dosage and Administration

10% Dextrose Solution (Adults): Dose is variable and depends on the clinical condition, age, and body surface area of the patient. Normal circulation is typically restored by infusing 20–30 ml/kg as rapidly as possible, followed by slower, planned subsequent fluid therapy based on laboratory findings.

5% Dextrose Solution (Adults): Frequently 500 to 1000 ml. Maximum infusion rate that avoids glycosuria is 0.5 g/kg/hour; about 95% is retained at 0.8 g/kg/hour. Maximum rate of glucose utilisation is approximately 800 mg/kg/hour.

25% Dextrose Solution (Adults): 10–35 drops per minute intravenously. Administer through the largest available peripheral vein; not for SC or IM use.

Oral Powder (Adults): 10–20 g as a single dose; may repeat in 10 minutes if needed. Children above 2 years: 10–20 g as a single dose; may repeat in 10 minutes.

Administration Instructions

Check infusion set and solution prior to use. Remove the protective cover of the Eurocap and insert the spike of the administration set firmly. Gradually allow fluid to flow down to the needle tip, then close. Locate and clean the venipuncture site with an antiseptic solution. Insert the needle, tape the puncture site securely, and start infusion while adjusting drip speed.

Interaction

Serum glucose concentration should be carefully monitored throughout infusion. Concurrent insulin may be needed for diabetic patients. Do not mix Infudex solution with whole blood. Discontinue infusion immediately if rigors occur. Do not use if the solution is cloudy, contains visible particles, or has passed its expiry date.
