DESCRIPTION
MOXILIN (Amoxicillin) is a broad spectrum antibiotic and active against various species of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms.
MOXILIN (Amoxicillin) is rapidly and completely absorbed in comparison with Ampicillin. It kills bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall.
COMPOSITION
Capsule 250 : Each capsule contains Amoxicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 250 mg Amoxicillin.
Capsule 500 : Each capsule contains Amoxicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 500 mg Amoxicillin.
Powder for Suspension : Each 5 ml reconstituted suspension contains
Amoxicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 125 mg Amoxicillin.
Powder for DS Suspension : Each 5 ml reconstituted suspension contains Amoxicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 250 mg Amoxicillin.
Powder for Paediatric Drops : Each 1.25 ml reconstituted paediatric drops contains Amoxicillin Trihydrate BP equivalent to 125 mg Amoxicillin.
Injection 250 : Each vial contains sterile powder of Amoxicillin Sodium
BP equivalent to 250 mg Amoxicillin.
Injection 500 : Each vial contains sterile powder of Amoxicillin Sodium
BP equivalent to 500 mg Amoxicillin.
INDICATIONS
Respiratory tract infections : Sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, laryngitis, pneumonia, lung abscess and bronchitis.
Genitourinary tract infections (Obstetric and gynaecological infections):
Pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, gonorrhoea.
Skin and soft tissue infections : Cellulitis, infected wounds, carbuncles, furunculosis.
Others : Endocarditis, septicaemia, post operative infections etc.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Oral
Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily, increasing to 500 mg three times daily for more severe infections.
Maximum recommended oral dosage 6 g daily in divided doses.
Severe or recurrent purulent respiratory tract infections : 3g twice daily.
Urinary tract infections : 3g repeated after 10 to 12 hours.
Dental abscess : 3g repeated after 8 hours.
Gonorrhoea : Single 3g dose.
Injection
Adults : Usual dose for general infection is 250 mg to 500 mg eight hourly intramuscularly. If needed doses may be increased as directed by the physician. In severe infections, 500 mg to 1 g may be given every 6 hours by slow intravenous injection over 3 to 4 minutes.
Children dosage:
Children (up to 10 years) : 125 mg three times daily, increasing to 250 mg three times daily for more severe infections.
Children (under 2 years) : 62.5-125 mg (½ to 1 measuring spoonful) 3 times daily.
Otitis media (children 3 to 10 years) : 750 mg twice daily for 2 days.
Children (up to 10 years) : Children may be given 50 to 100 mg /kg body weight in 3-4 divided doses by intramuscularly or slow intravenous injection over 3-4 minutes.
DIRECTION FOR RECONSTITUTION OF INJECTION
Intramuscular : Dissolve 250 mg and 500 mg powder in vial with 1.5 ml and 2.5 ml water for injection respectively.
Intravenous : For MOXILIN 250 injection, dissolve the powder in vial with 5 ml water for injection and for MOXILIN 500 injection, dissolve the powder in vial with 5-10 ml water for injection. MOXILIN injection, suitably diluted, may be injected into a vein or drip tube over a period of 3 to 4 minutes or may also be added to infusion fluids.
SIDE EFFECTS
Side effects are mild and transient but diarrhoea, indigestion, skin rashes may occur rarely.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Amoxicillin is contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients, in glandular fever and in conditions caused by a bacterial species with a high proportion of Ampicillin or Amoxicillin resistant strains.
PRECAUTIONS
In renal impairment the excretion of the antibiotic will be delayed and depending on the degree of impairment it may be necessary to reduce the total daily dosage.
SUPPLY
Capsule 250 : Each box contains 10 X 10 capsules in blister.
Capsule 500 : Each box contains 5 X10 capsules in blister.
Powder for Suspension : Each bottle contains required amount of powder to reconstitute 100 ml suspension.
Powder for DS Suspension : Each bottle contains required amount of powder to reconstitute 100 ml DS suspension.
Powder for Paediatric Drops : Each bottle contains required amount of powder to reconstitute 15 ml paediatric drops. A dropper is given to measure 1.25 ml.
Injection 250 : Each box contains five blister packs, each blister containing one vial of 250 mg Amoxicillin powder and one ampoule of 5 ml water for injection.
Injection 500 : Each box contains five blister packs, each blister containing one vial of 500 mg Amoxicillin powder and one ampoule of 5 ml water for injection.
