Composition
Butacit syrup : Each 5 ml syrup contains Butamirate Citrate INN 7.5 mg.
Butacit Paediatric Drops : Each ml contains Butamirate Citrate INN 5 mg.
Pharmacology
Butacit (Butamirate Citrate) acts directly on the brain’s cough center to suppress cough. It also exerts expectorant, moderate bronchodilating and anti-inflammatory action. Butacit (Butamirate Citrate) is safe and non-sedating which is neither chemically nor pharmacologically related to opium alkaloids. Its elimination half-life is about 13 hours.
Indication
• Dry (non-productive) cough
• Pre-& post-operative cough in surgery & bronchoscopy
• Suppression of whooping cough
Dose & Administration
Route of Administration : Oral.
Syrup :
Children (3-6 yrs) : 5 ml 3 times daily orally.
Children (6-12 yrs): 10 ml 3 times daily orally. Adults: 15 ml 4 times daily orally.
Paediatric Drops :
Children (2 months-1 year) : 10 drops 4 times daily orally.
Children (1-3 years) : 15 drops 4 times daily orally.
OR, AS DIRECTED BY THE PHYSICIAN.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Butamirate Citrate or any component of the product.
Warnings and Precautions
Avoid simultanous administration of expectorants. Avoid during pregnancy (1st 3 months) and lactation.
Side Effect
Tolerance of Butamirate Citrate is good.
Rare Side Effects : Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhoea and vertigo have been observed in a few rare cases.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Butamirate Citrate should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy. During the remainder of pregnancy, it can be used if indicated by a physician but with caution.
Use in Children and adolescents
Use of Butamirate Citrate is safe and effective as per dosage guideline.
Drug Interaction
Concomitant use of expectorants may lead to retention of mucous in the respiratory system, which can increase the risk of bronchospasm and airway infection.
Overdose
Accidental overdose with Butamirate Citrate can cause the symptoms like drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of balance and hypotension.
